Description

Hydraulics is an important field for subsea and offshore engineers, as it is used extensively in the design and operation of offshore structures and equipment. Subsea and offshore operations are often carried out at significant depths and pressures, and hydraulics plays a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of equipment and systems.

Some of the key areas where hydraulics is used in subsea and offshore engineering include:

Control Systems: Hydraulics is used in the design and operation of control systems for subsea and offshore equipment. These systems typically use hydraulic fluid to transmit power and control signals between different components.

BOP Control Systems: Blowout Preventer (BOP) control systems are critical safety systems used to prevent well blowouts during drilling operations. Hydraulics is used extensively in the design and operation of BOP control systems, as they require high-pressure fluid to actuate the various valves and components.

ROV Systems: Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are commonly used in subsea operations for inspection, maintenance, and repair work. Hydraulics is used to power the ROV’s manipulator arms, as well as its propulsion and steering systems.

Tensioning Systems: Offshore structures such as drilling rigs and production platforms require tensioning systems to maintain their stability in the face of changing sea conditions. Hydraulics is used to power these tensioning systems, which typically use hydraulic cylinders to adjust the tension in the mooring lines or risers.

Umbilicals: Umbilicals are bundles of cables and hoses that are used to transmit power, control signals, and fluids between subsea equipment and the surface. Hydraulics is often used in the design and operation of umbilicals, particularly for the fluid lines that transport hydraulic fluid to the subsea equipment.

Hydraulics for Subsea & Offshore Engineers (BHSO) Level 1 & Level 2 has been developed to provide the students with the knowledge of hydraulic principles and fundamentals of industrial hydraulics found in offshore and subsea industry. On completion the attendee will have a knowledge and understanding of fluid power principles along with skills in schematic symbol recognition.
